Creative Arts Therapy

I want to invite you to a unique therapeutic experience that goes beyond talking therapy. Engaging all your senses and a variety of art materials opens up an opportunity to co-create a space that welcomes your creativity and self expression. You will be amazed by the self realisations and resonances you can discover by holding an embodied presence to all your creative processes. It is not at all about producing a finished artwork but more about how you get there, the choices you make, and how you feel supported on the journey.

MY APPROACH

It is so important to me that my art therapy participants feel safe and comfortable. I invite potential new participants to book a 15 minute phone call or zoom so they can talk to me, ask questions and find out if we are a good fit. In sessions we co create a space together and I follow the lead of the person. I may suggest we start with a meditation or visualisation to separate from the rest of the day, but only if it feels right. If you come to my studio, I will supply art materials. Working online, I will always check with the client about what materials they have available to them. I hope that my creative spaces are conducive to deep reflection, comfort and sometimes even fun.

QUALIFICATIONS

My Masters in Therapeutic Arts Practice from MIECAT Melbourne was completed part time over three years concluding in 2019. I was immediately registered by ANZACATA and I am now a member of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA). Cognitive coaching and Re-evaluation Counselling are areas I have trained in and continue to assist my practice. I have completed an Introduction to Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Family Constellations. Training as a facilitator in SoulCollage® adds another dimension to my offerings which is easily accessible to all clients.

CURRENT WORK

Since qualifying as a creative arts therapist I have run my own business and continue to contract for Creative Arts Therapy Australia. I feel fortunate to have had a great diversity in my work assisting very young children all the way through to the elderly. I know all participants have experienced arts therapy as beneficial to their wellbeing, whether it be the delicate transition to end of life or the simple act of self regulation of emotions through artistic processes. Working with adults is my current passion, as I enjoy the ability to work with deep reflection and metaphor assisted by the images we work with.

Testimonials

Jo has accompanied me on my journey as an emerging artist. At the beginning I did not have the confidence to even get the paints out. I did not think that I could create anything that I would like. After each session, my confidence grew and my creative expression unfolded. Jo walked besides me with a loving presence and gentle encouragement. She created a space of play and enjoyment. She focused on my strengths and abilities. I discovered my playful inner child who loves to paint and is free to express herself creatively. After each session, Jo sent me an image or a poem with something potent from our session together. This made me feel understood and cared for. It provided a beautiful reminder and trail of our work.

Having Art therapy sessions with Jo was very meaningful and powerful for me. I loved how Jo was attentive to everything I said and how she had the gift to hear the subtleties of what I was communicating, and working with that in significant and insightful ways that keep on resonating in me after we had finished our process together. Some of the art and visual images we have created together assist me more than words to remember my practice and be immersed in my practice on a daily basis.
Thank you Jo!

What Jo and the Lunchtime Art Club achieved in terms of student wellbeing and connection across the space of three terms has been life changing for the students involved.

Lunchtime Art Club has demonstrated the power of the Arts and shared experience as vehicles to develop genuine peer connection. Jo has been the facilitator of this process through compassion, interest and curiosity. For all students involved in Lunchtime Art Club this connection has been such a protective factor in their emotional health and wellbeing. Furthermore, all have forged a very special bond with Jo who has been so open to learning about them as individuals. It has been an absolute pleasure working with Jo this year. She has made my role so much easier, and the members of this club so much happier.
